Spurgeon's Department Store

Spurgeons Dept. Store chain was once a midwestern downtown mainstay for many years. They were known for their wide array of products, including clothing, household goods, and various other merchandise.

The first Spurgeon's Department store opened in Kansas City, Mo, in 1868 by James Spurgeon. Spurgeon's Made their first appearance in Kewanee, Il, in 1925. Their first known location was at 218 North Tremont St. They then moved to 117 West 2nd St in September of 1975. Spurgeon's then closed in 1991 for undisclosed reasons.

The company fostered a reputation for quality merchandise at affordable prices, which helped it carve out a niche in the retail market. The department store model emphasized a one-stop shopping experience, appealing to a broad consumer base seeking convenience and value.

Spurgeon's Department Stores remain a part of retail history, emblematic of a time when department stores were the cornerstone of American shopping culture, providing consumers with a wide range of goods in a single location. The rise and fall of Spurgeon's reflect broader trends in consumer behavior, retail innovation, and the shifting economic landscape of the United States.

Many Kewanee residents remember Jackie DeMay, the "Candy Lady", on the lower level at the candy counter. Staff recall using the building chute for disposing of materials and taking a personal slide down it afterhours, a time or two.

Spurgeon's holds a memory for most local residents, from their candy shop, first ear piercings, or getting their hair done by either Diana, Jackie, or Cheryl, routinely, or for a special occasion.

We couldn't be more thrilled to continue creating "Moments" for the citizens of Kewanee and surrounding areas.
